Report from C.Sterry
With now a whole teams worth of players injured/sick, suspended, and otherwise unavailable today Arlesey made a few more new signings this week and introduced Dammy Nickels-Benson, Olu Quadri, and Kai Stonnell into the starting line up and Nathanial Fowler and George Mitchell-Gears to the bench. Also making a home debut was Henry Musay signed last week, which gave this a distinct "pre-season squad" look to the line up.
Another big strong team in Egham faced them on a bitterly cold day.
Egham started strongly wih a free kick that hit the wall and the 9 who forced his way into the box before shooting but Lewis Elsom made a really good save at his feet and it was cleared. Although Egham made the early pressure it was Arlesey who struck first on 12 mins as Tony Williams did well and won a corner. Joe Steele who returned to the line up today headed down powerfully, the keeper parried it but Henry Musay was in front of him, and put the ball back over him for 1-0 to Arlesey.
Arlesey then had to defend a bit but the new lads looked to be finding themselves and getting things together and Kai Stonnell working well down the wing pulled a good cross in that just evaded Rafe Goodman, and he combined well with Williams and Goodman before it was stopped by a very good tackle. On 26 mins an Egham corner finally evaded the defence and their new signing Marcus Mealing came in at the far post to head home for 1-1.
Arlesey hit back with Stonnell doing well to feed in Williams who beat his man and hit a shot on the turn the whistled really close to the top corner.
On 40mins Arleseys "curse of the right backs" struck again as Dammy Nickells- Benson went down injured and while he was off the pitch a deflected shot fell to the 10 who went very easily over a defenders leg and a penalty was awarded to Egham. He placed the penalty and shot but Elsom got it right and made a great save low by the post. Arlesey were fourced to replace Nickells-Benson but it remained 1-1 at HT.
The 2nd half started much the same as the 1st with Egham pressing forward and on 62 mins they pulled the ball back and forced it into the net from close range but it was ruled O/S by the lino. Just 2 mins later they got it right as a good cross in found Mealing again and he made no mistake vollying in from close range for 1-2.
Arlesey pushed forward as they tried to keep in the game as Elias Moses found Williams and Taz Andrews and they won a corner. Steeles header was blocked before Stonnell hit a shot that brought a good save from the keeper. From an Egham corner in the 77th min the centre half sqeezed in at the far post and just manager to steer the ball in at the far post for 1-3.
With changes being made on both sides sub Nathaniel Fowler latched onto a good through ball, beat his man and slotted past the advacing keeper for a very well taken goal on his debute and make it 2-3.
Arlesey now piled on the pressure in the dieing minutes but Egham defended in depth and they just couldnt break through and it finished 2-3. This was a good game, The team had a very "makeshift" look to it today that was beyond anybody's control but they all worked hard and the new players looked promising which may creat a problem next week as players return to fitness and availability, but on this performance more than a few on the new brigade have staked their claim on the shirt.
