Match Report From C. Sterry
Its starting to get to the point that you could almost write the report before the game as to the outcome of the game; a hat full of chances coming Arlesey's way that could and should have been converted but weren't and the other side getting a few shots off that went home.
Arlesey were missing Henry Musay today but got back Luke Abraham and Arti Krasniqi. On another bitterly cold day Arlesey started brightly taking the game to Ashford with Tony Williams putting in a great looking cross that the keeper took 2 attempts to gather and Krasniqi putting in a cross/shot that skimmed the bar but on Ashfords 1st attack on 6 mins Max Web picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box, hit it 1st time and it beat Lewis Elsom low by the foot of his post for 0-1. Arlesey should have equalised from a Ryan Lamond free kick that was headed on by Abraham to put Rafe Goodman in behind the defence but he hit his shot straight at the keeper.
In the 14th min from an Ashford free kick the big tall centre half went down extremely easily over a defender and a penalty was given. The 9 hit the penalty and Elsom dived to make the save for the 2nd time in 2 games but this time it went wide and the Ashford men moved quicker putting the ball back into the center for a easy tap in for the 9 who had hardly moved 0-2. Arlesey then worked hard creating chance after chance, a sequence of several corners came to Kai Stonnell who hit a well controled volly that was deflected wide, a good move fed in Krasniqi but his shot was at the keeper, A good pull back from the bye line by Tony Williams found Olu Quadri in just about the perfect spot but he mishit his shot, Krasniqi had a shot saved and a pen appeal turned down before a clearence up field on 42 mins found ex-Arlesey player Kam English and he controlled the ball and hit it in one move driving it past Elsom for 0-3 and a very good goal so it was 0-3 at half time.
The 2nd period started with Goodman going off injured to add to the list and for much of the 2nd half Arlesey were pretty much camped in the Ashford half but with a 3 goal cushion Ashford were happy to "park the bus" and do the odd raid that didn't cause many problems apart from one when Elsom slipped and with 2 Ashford forwards with an open goal they fluffed their lines putting it wide.
With the game slipping away Arlesey finally broke through as Taylor Rhiney got into the box and shot finding "super sub" Nathanial Fowler who for his 2nd game did as he did in his 1st and scored blasting the ball into the roof of the net from close in for 1-3. A long ball up from Elsom saw the keeper drop the ball but Rhiney's shot was deflected for a corner that was cleared and Williams had a shot that was saved before the final whistle finally went.
It really is getting a bit like groundhog day but Arlesey ARE creating chances and playing well but they just arnt converting them where other teams are. This must change in the coming weeks with big games away at Marlow and Aylesbury and Boxing day at home to Barton.
